Suicide is not only a reaction to unmet needs, but also the need for important psychological freedoms, such as freedom from pain, freedom from guilt, freedom from shame, freedom from rejection, and aloneness. When these freedoms are traumatically violated, an individual who realistically lacks “a court of appeal” may take matters into his own hands and remove his consciousness from the painful scene.
